So, Enterprise will be the last we see of Star Trek for a while. As a bit of a trek fan myself (DS9 being my favourite), I'm very glad they're taking a break. They had such an opportunity to make a difference with Enterprise and tackle some of the interesting stories of how and why the federation was formed, handling the politics that must have dogged the universe prior to the Kirk & co five year voyage. What a waste they've made of it. There's been good moments throughout, but I really can't say I've warmed to any of the characters (with the possible exception of Phlox), and I now hear that the finale is going to be more of a Big Reset Button than the Bobby Ewing shower story. Hello? There _is_ a difference between tying up loose ends and burning the rope, ya know?
Well, it's a damn good thing that Galactica has been renewed for a second season, proving that there are still some people out there who know how to make good television with a sci fi edge. And there are the DS9 relaunch books, which are really shaking up that late-trek universe (Damn I wish they'd go back and make more DS9 so I can see this stuff happening on the screen, rather than just in my imagination!)
I've got really mixed feelings about the prospects for next season's Stargate SG1 too. I'm worried, because I really didn't like Farscape. I saw some of the supposedly excellent TV movie thing that came out recently and it was absolutely bloody awful. Ok, so I don't know the plots, I don't know the back stories of the characters, but it was just terrible in so many ways. And there are two Farscape people joining SG1. I guess that as long as they stay away from muppets, it might be ok, but I'll miss my RDA of RDA. Mind you, Atlantis might yet win me over. It's still early days, but they've got some good cast members in there, notably the uber-geek character of Doctor McKay. As a geek myself, I love watching good geek characters on the telly, and having read an interview with the actor who plays him, I've warmed to him even more.
I used to kinda shy away from my geekiness, but I'm past caring any more. I like beign a geek. I like science fiction. I've even subscribed to SFX recently (a fine magazine). And if our holiday plans come to fruition, I'll be dragging James round the Star Trek experience at the Las Vegas Hilton some time this summer :)
