Green fingers

For some reason, I've found myself getting more and more interested in gardening each year. Perhaps it's just a maturity thing, or perhaps it's just that I realise that I need to do something - anything - with my time that doesn't involve computers. Anyhoo, I finally decided that this year I was going to try to grpw some of my own plants. So, mistake number 1 - assuming that most of the seeds wouldn't germinate, so using the whole packet of each. I now have two incredibly packed seed trays full of young tomato plants (two different varieties - no...

Serenity Trailer

Very excitingly, a new trailer has appeared for Serenity - the film created by Joss Whedon after his fantastic series Firefly was cancelled after just 13 episodes. Where to begin

I've had an interesting time at work recently. Aside from the usual "gotta get this finished by the end of the deadline", I've been working with a couple of developers with very little .NET experience. Now I've spent a lot of time writing about learning ASP.NET in all the versions of the books I've worked on, but I've not really had the opportunity to meet the target audience (or close to it) until these last couple of weeks. For a developer who uses them every day, tools like the DateTime bits in .NET and the fact that you can _still_...

Vote of confidence

I've just been asked back to do some work for a client continuing from the work I did for them a couple of weeks ago. However, this time round I'll need to do a bit more learning... the conversation went along the lines of "I'd like you to help us to develop a custom ISAPI filter for ISA Server. Oh yes, and there's Biztalk involved now too." I've never done any work with C++. I'm aware of its existence, naturally, and I occasionally see some C++ code in passing, but that's as far as my experience goes. I did once think...
