Green fingers

For some reason, I've found myself getting more and more interested in gardening each year. Perhaps it's just a maturity thing, or perhaps it's just that I realise that I need to do something - anything - with my time that doesn't involve computers. Anyhoo, I finally decided that this year I was going to try to grpw some of my own plants.

So, mistake number 1 - assuming that most of the seeds wouldn't germinate, so using the whole packet of each. I now have two incredibly packed seed trays full of young tomato plants (two different varieties - no idea which varieties, though!), baby chilli plants, pepper plants, aubergine plants and some lobelia (I think). I also have two compartmentalised trays of tomatoes which have been removed from the seed tray that are growing on their own.

At the moment, the situation is manageable, but I'm going to run out of space. I have visions of sitting on the driveway on a saturday selling them for a few pence each to raise money for charity or something. It's still early days - none of them are anywhere near maturity yet, but they've got past their first set of leaves and they're on to their "real" leaves now, so it's only a matter of time...

Welcome to my childhood. From early spring the entire house was just like a potting shed. Once we all moved out, that extended into the bedrooms, where every windowsill is covered. It's still like that. But it's worth it - tomatoes with flavour. Yum.

Don't forget to plant marigolds around the bases - greenflies and other assorted aphids don't like the taste of them and keep away. This means you don't have to risk using pesticides.

Another thing to try planting near them is garlic because (apparently - I've not see this one in action) it makes the soil around it taste of garlic and the bugs aren't too keen on that, either. Pre-garlicky tomatoes. Yum!
