Professional?

As many of you will be aware, I'm currently spending my spare time attempting to write chapters for the next edition of Beginning ASP.NET. It's not an easy task - my current job means I'm away from home a couple of nights a week, and I'm so busy that I barely have time to sort out the washing at the end of the week, let alone write chapters for a book! The thing that's bothering me (and hence why I'm inflicting this on you lot) is that, in my current position, I feel further away from the target audience on this...

Dubya and the Rods from God

Apparently, George wants his own version of Star Wars, with wacky weapons including

...dense metal tubes dropped from space by a weapon known as "Rods from God" on ground targets [Via Guardian Unlimited] I know I'll sleep soundly knowing that George has dense metal rods trained on the evil terrorists.

Revenge of the whinging teen

"It's not fair, why can't I be a Jedi master? I'm going to sulk now - you guys are just wrong, plain wrong. You all suck, and I hate you all." Hmm. Ok, first of all, don't worry - I'm not going to reveal any plot developments in here about the latest Star Wars that you don't already know. However, I do have to vent my feelings on this ... thing.... this... messy, noisy, cacophony of computer graphics and dot-to-dot plot that was supposed to ease the transition from the first three films to the second three (or is that...

Winds of change

The BBC have changed their weather maps. These are the maps that tell the British public about the sort of weather they can expect to have over the next 24-48 hours. The bulletins are usually shown quite frequently in the middle of news programs, so I normally see part of at least one weather bulletin each day, giving me a rough idea of what to wear each day. The old traditional symbols were very clear - a sun on its own and it's likely to be very sunny. A single grey cloud and it's overcast. The BBC website still uses...

Air con

Maybe it's just me, but I much prefer to have an open window to regulate the temperature in a room. It's a simple enough process - if it gets warm, open a window. If it's too warm outside to reduce the temperature to a comfortable level, then - and only then - should air conditioning be employed to reduce the temperature of the office environment. My opinion: breathing recycled, artificially cooled, dry air can't be good for the lungs, plus I'm sure it probably costs companies a small fortune in electricity to actually cool the air... ironically, pulling in extra...

Very Grand Designs

The British televisual airwaves are almost saturated with home improvement, home design, house selling, house buying, and garden designing programs, and it's a pretty good bet that once you sit me down in front of one of them, "girly stuff" happens in my head and I start getting ideas. However, one idea I've had for the past five years was the one that popped into my head as I had my house rewired, walls replastered, and was laying laminate flooring in the lounge, which was "wouldn't it be great if we could build our own place, so we wouldn't have...
