Smart baby

A really wierd thing has happened to my Windows Live Messenger (v. 8.1 beta) - I'd not noticed it before, but every message I type with a quote mark (single or double) is using smart quotes instead of straight quotes. While many people may like this, I hate it - back at Wrox, we used to fish out all the smart quotes from chapters so they didn't end up in code extracts (smart quotes in code = yuk!), and I'm really much happier without them.

Now I'm not sure if it's the new version or the fact that Nathan was playing with the keyboard earlier, but I now seem to be sending messages with smart quotes. I would much rather not use them - does anyone out there know if it's a new messenger 8.1 thing, or whether it's the Nathan effect? The only place where I've seen anything relevant is in MS Word, and I've just gone in and turned off all smart quote replacing nastiness (barely use Word on this computer and since it was relatively recently reinstalled I'd not remembered to turn them off before now). Turning them off in Word seems to have had no effect - any ideas anyone?
