mTLD to enforce Web standards in .mobi

Hmm. Now the Co-op movement defines itself as being open and giving back to the community. There's no sequitor which would lead us to enforce web standards development only, nor would we, but it's a brave move by mTLD. I wonder how they are expecting to enforce this code of conduct? Builder.com reports that mTLD will force anyone wishing to register in .mobi will require its customers to stick to rules on how their users' Web sites are developed. Assuming this can/will be policed are there any *disadvantages* to the approach ? Could it be enforced in other TLDs ?"...

Libertine movie chases UK awards

Cool. I remember talking to Stephen Jeffries about this at NSDF a couple of years ago when they had to move the production to the Isle of Man for budgetary reasons. It's great that their efforts have paid off. Now if only I could see the film, that would be nice too. The Libertine and Mrs Henderson Presents dominate nominations at the British Independent Film Awards.[Via BBC News | Entertainment | UK Edition]

Bewildered in Brunei

My good friend, Dom - also best man at my wedding - has just accepted a teaching post in Brunei and is moving his family halfway round the world to start in January. To commemorate this inspired act of extreme education, he has started blogging over here. Expect another diary in the vein of Culture Shock Subscribed!

The Registry Environment

The Registry environment is a funny old beast that sits in a corner that most people take for granted. Buy a domain name and you're done. Of course, it's not that simple. There's a lot of politicking at the moment. For example, with E-Bay buying Verisign's payment processing unit, things may look slightly up in the war against phishing but what future ramifications could it have? Verisign run the dotCom and dotOrg registries albeit with cries of cronyism after ICANN railroaded Versign's reapplication to run dotOrg was beset with a number of irregularities that it chose to ignore. With the...

Extending XSD in .NET 2.0

One of the apps we inherited from the London office in the dotCoop suite was a neat little exe which extended the functionality in xsd.exe. It altered the CodeNamespace it generated from an XML Schema into something a bit more useful, using this article as a basis for what it did. I'm delighted to say that while it hasn't been made completely redundant, xsd.exe 2.0 now supports a couple of features which had to be written into the Extender. You can now pass multiple schema files to xsd at once xsd now...

Waiting for the Whidbey

It's alternately fantastic and frustrating to be working with .NET 2.0 at the moment. Waiting for the actual final version of VS2005 on Nov 7 - grr. We've decided at work that dotCoop will be switching to a .NET 2.0 \ full test-driven development rewrite which is great. Full VSTS\TFS set-up and let's see if we can get it all working in a more integrated way than our current five-random-dev-programs-that-we-only-join-using-Windows-Explorer style of setup. This is great except it's not out yet, there are notable changes over beta 2 which we are still using and TFS isn't out until January 2006....

Clerks 2 gets under way

Kevin Smith has started filming his follow-up to the film that made his name. To commemorate (or commiserate as he would have) it, he's started a new video diary over at clerks2.com along with a very cheesy teaser trailer. Worth watching the first entry only to confirm his sense of humour hasn't failed in the last fifteen seconds.
