A few more things Microsoft SHOULD be announcing at MIX07 (but won't)

Jon Galloway writes The 9 things Microsoft SHOULD be announcing next week at MIX07 (but won't). It's now less than a day to the 'big announcement' at MIX '07 and I'd love for a couple of these to become true - I can't see how Silverlight will be written for without an Express version of Blend for example and I'd never heard of Singularity before but want to know more now - but here's what else I'd hope to hear. Microsoft is now a 64-bit only company Some of you may already have surmised this from the fact...

WINDOWS TIP: Quickly check if you're logged in as Administrator

very handy.....  A rare computer-related tip on the Tricks of the Trade weblog comes in handy for family or friend tech support warriors: If you need to quickly tell if the person currently logged onto a PC is a local administrator of the Windows server, right click on the START button. If you see "Open All Users" rather than just "Open," the account is in the local Administrators group. Now commence the flagellation of users logging in as a Windows admin by default. Keep The Mayhem At Bay : Refactor Your Day

Ray Lewallen bemoans the lack of hours in the day I blame Microsoft and bloggers for my brain function lately.  I just can’t keep up with everything going on, and I don’t really even try to...... And I know where he's coming from having had three major deadlines hit me in the last week. But it's still possible to keep up to date and keep up the pace. Warren Ellis sums it up nicely Client software and email means that I often post to the web without actually going there. I'm at the computer a lot, obviously, because I write for a living. ...

Orcas Beta 1 Now Available

There's now a large grin on my face.Visual Studio Orcas Beta 1 is now available for download from here. That's the Express Editions as individual downloads and Team Suite as a VPC. ISOs for VS Pro, Team Suite and TFS are MSDN Subscription only however. Charlie Calvert also points out that all the LINQ samples for beta 1 are available here too. So much for my weekend then. Getting the Community Server 2007 SDK Running From Scratch

Telligent have released Community Server 2007 and with it the SDK - basically all the source code for the product. If you want to do any development for this new version of CS, you'll need to download this and get it working. It's all manual install though and as Dave Stokes hasn't managed to update his install guide yet, here are some rough and ready instructions for running it from scratch using SQL authentication with the database.  NB. This is a VS2005 SP1 \ ASP.NET 2.0 project only now, so no more VS2003 support. Download the SDK from...

Project "Athens" revised to a Community Server Beater?

Interesting to note the timing on this one - on the day that Telligent launched Community Server 2007, Microsoft publicly launched what seems to be a beta of something not a million miles away from it, currently codenamed "Athens". Now the last time they used this codename, it referred to the project for an ideal home pc, presumably now made obsolete by the arrival of dedicated Media Center PCs and Windows Home Server boxes. Perhaps this second Athens project will also fade away in time? The tagspace demo is an interesting mashup of various Web 2.0 sites already out there, but what are...

One small step for documentation, one giant leap for ASP.NET novices

It's almost eighteen months now since Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 was released and if there's one thing the feedback forum for that book has taught Wrox and its authors, it's never to underestimate the reader. The book uses (quite reasonably) Visual Web Developer and SQL Server Express for a database and code editor on the basis that it's very easy to build a simple site using both in a short period of time. But of course there are those readers who want to use IIS, or other versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server (in some cases on operating systems other than WIndows Xp...

Would you knowingly install a Trojan?

A friend of mine recently had a "lot of fun" trying to uninstall a gambling blocker from a friend's laptop. He'd done most of the job identifying how it worked and with a little prompting from me used Sysinternals' Process Manager and Process Explorer to finish the job. Our discussions made me think of the problems Mark Russinovitch had with the Sony Rootkit last year and although it's not quite as well written as that, I asked my friend to write up his investigation for everyone to see. He hasn't got a blog so I've posted it here. What strikes...

Why IE v.next? Why not IE2 v.1

Chris Wilson on the IE team blogs about the current thread on the HTML WG where he fights his corner for maintaining backwards compatibility in IE against becoming more standards compliant. It's a good post too. But here's a thought - why not leave IE as it is and release a new completely compliant (as far as possible) browser which is not called Internet Explorer? The Expression team alrady wrote a new renderer from scratch that now sits in Expression Web and VS Orcas, so why not build around that and not worry about backward compatibility. If it's not the...

Flash 7 or 8 Required? But Flash 9 Is Installed!

There's definitely a problem with IE7 and the Adobe Flash plug-in. Many times I've had a site say 'Flash 7/8 required. Click to install' when I know that Flash 9 is installed already and going to the Adobe site confirms this with a Flash 9 animation. So where's the issue? It looks like I'm not the only one with this problem, and courtesy of devlib.org, it appears that most users who continue to use the Flash 8 plugin in IE7 are unaffected. But when these users upgrade to Flash 9 or install MSN Live Messenger — which in turn insists on...

Vote for me at DDD5

Well, I've gone and done it now. DDD5 - that's DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper 5 - the event series upon which WebDD was based - has been announced for June 30 and I've submitted a proposal to do a presentation on Continuous Integration. Everyone should have a go at presenting at least once in their life, so vote for me!   Technorati tags: DDD5, Presentations, DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper
