That was the week that was

Nothing blogged this week - been busy learning more than any person should be forced to about DNS, domain registration, and a little known but intriguing XML-based protocol called EPP, which has some general applications, but is mostly used for communications between domain registrars and internet domain registries.

All of which is deeply fascinating to about three people, but to everybody else is, and should be, a load of gobbledegook. Mostly, it means I've been spending the last week doing something I really enjoy: learning about esoteric bits of technology. So in all, it's been a good week. Set to go down to London the week after next to have a dig around in some interesting-sounding code, too, so, the job's currently working out pretty well.

In the wider world, what's been happening? Well, two upper class divorcees are going to get married, which apparently is a cause of some controversy. A century ago, this would have required at least an abdication and threatened to destabilise the empire; two centuries ago, it would have required parliament to pass a bill clearing up the line of succession, at the risk of causing a civil war; three centuries ago, it would have triggered a major war between the main European powers; four centuries ago, it would have required a total overhaul of the dominant religion in Europe. Personally, I think this demonstrates that overall, the decline in power of the monarchy has been a Good Thing.

And, with a gathering sense of tedious despair, we see that the general election is bearing down on us. And so, the process of narrowing down the full range of areas in which government impacts our lives to a handful of issues, so that each party can be placed at a convenient polar extreme, begins. At least we'll have the amusement of watching Kilroy-Silk's self-delusion play out in public over the next few months.

In other words, our press have taken an inward-looking turn. Just as well I've got the domain business to distract me or it'd all be rather depressing.
