C# 3.0

So the highlight of yesterday was a pair of sessions with Anders Hjelsberg, where he went over the language changes that're being introduced in C# to support the LINQ project. The lambda expression syntax and expression tree types look amazingly powerful, and little touches like the extension methods system are pretty impressive. It remains to be seen whether letting developers let the compiler decide what type to make thier variables by declaring them with the var keyword (a necessary change given anonymous types and the complex synthetic types that arise through generics) is a smart timesaving move, or just something that will...

PDC Los Angeles

So, we made it - we're at PDC in LA. It's been a hectic conference so far, and although there've been few earthshaking announcements, the new stuff we have been introduced to has been pretty cool. BillG's keynote was mostly fairly bland “Windows Vista's going to be huge” corporate stuff, but Jim Allchin's overenthusiastic followon included some nice stuff, like Vista's cool trick of exploiting free space on attached USB key devices as virtual RAM - and the demos from Don Box, Anders Hjelsberg et al were slick. LINQ is obviously the big story - changing the way you process collection...
